It means being emotionally and financially prepared to care for your companion through every stage of life, including those unexpected vet visits. I encourage families to set aside an emergency fund for vet care—because accidents and illness happen.

I have always loved dogs—the joy a dog brings is worth the effort. Their companionship lifts my spirits, brings daily laughter, and fills our home with that much more love. In my experience, the best way to start resolving that hurt is to fill that hole in your heart with another cold nose. There will never be a replacement for your previous pal, but your new friend will remind you that there is more time for devotion and love from another companion in your life.
